FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)
What do you need to process my order?
Ordering from A&E Metal Roofing is very simple. The panels cover 36" and we can cut them to the nearest inch. You will need to determine the number of sheets and the length that you will be covering. All trim pieces are in 10 feet sections. Just give us a call and we will be glad to assist you any way we can. Once the order is placed, it will typically be ready the next business day.
How are you able to offer such a short lead time, I usually have to wait a week to get my order?
We are the manufacturer, not the middle man. You are buying direct when you order from A&E Metal Roofing. We pride ourselves on having the best service, price and quality. If you really need your order the same day we can do that also, just let us know and we will do our best to make it happen.
I see some metal roofs fading and chalking, are darker colors more subject to fading?
What you are seeing is probably an economy metal painted with polyester paint. We only use coils that have a premium finish using siliconized polyester paint. That is why our panels carry a 30 year limited warranty. A good rule of thumb is “you get what you pay for”.
What are the advantages of metal over other types of roofing?
Metal panels are offered in a wide variety of colors with long life coatings to resist growth of mildew, moss and fungus. Metal roofing is lightweight strong and when properly applied can withstand winds over 100 mph. Finally, metal roofing last longer, conserves energy and requires very little maintenance.
Do I need any special tools to install metal roofing?
You can use a screw gun or cordless drill to apply the screws. Cutting can be done with a good pair of tin snips. We stock a variety of tools such as metal cutting saw blades, shears, aviation snips nutdrivers, etc.
Can metal roofing be installed over existing shingles?
29 ga metal only adds about 12 ounces per square foot to the roof. It can be installed over shingles, however you may want to consider stripping it with 2x4 or 1x4 furring strips 24" on center. If the shingles are still laying flat and not beginning to curl you can apply a layer of 30# roofing felt. You should always refer to your local building code before you start.
What type of insulation can I use under the metal roofing?
We stock Astro-Foil roll insulation. This is a new product that works great for roofing, pole barns, metal framed shops, etc. It has foil on the top side, white poly on the underside with a layer of air bubbles in the middle. This insulation has a R-Value of 9.2 and blocks 97% of the radiant heat. Studies have shown that using a radiant barrier insulation and providing proper ventilation will save the homeowner money for years to come. This insulation is also Energy Star rated which means tax benefits for the homeowner.
How are the panels attached?
We stock screws to match the metal color in several lengths. It is recommenced that the screws be located in the flats of the panels. However, some homeowners and installers prefer to fasten it on top of the ribs. This can be done but extra care has to be taken not to over tighten the screw and to properly align the screw on the rib. Please refer to your local building code for their recommendations
Will a metal roof make my house more susceptible to lightning?
No. A metal roof will not make a building or a house more susceptible to lightning strikes. Lightning will tend to strike the highest object in a given area regardless what the object is made of. All houses and buildings should be properly grounded. A metal roof can actually be beneficial in the event of a lightning strike due to being a non-combustible material.
Is metal roofing noisy when it rains?
No more noisy than it is now. When properly installed over insulation and/or 30# felt, assuming you have ceiling insulation and a drywall ceiling, you can hardly hear it raining.
How long will a metal roof last?
Our panels carry a 30 year limited warranty. This could be the last roof you ever have to put on your house with a life expectancy of well over 30 years. Corrosion resistant substrates and long life finishes ensure long term performance and minimal maintenance.
What patterns do you offer?
We manufacture two different profiles. We have the standard 9" rib panel that is very popular for residential and agricultural construction as well as the PBR Panel that is used most often for commercial applications. We have 14 different colors in stock for the 29 ga panel and 8 colors in the 26 ga that can be run in the 9" rib panel or the PBR panel.
